Reduction of energy use, the substitution of energy produced using fossil fuels with energy derived from renewable organic resources and effective use and recycling of organic wastes is central to sustainability. As society towards a low carbon economy agriculture will provide organic matter as a renewable source of energy. Much of the organic matter that will be used for this purpose is currently returned to soil and contributes to the maintenance or improvement of soil quality.
