I joined GYA in 2006 after working in research and then as a government agricultural advisor.
My academic path started with a BSc in Ecology from Edinburgh University where I became interested in agriculture and how food can be produced sustainably and in extreme and changing environments. This took me to a PhD on crop drought tolerance and from there to work at a Natural Environmental Research Council institute on soil, water and crop management in agricultural systems, mainly in developing countries. More recently I gained experience of farm advice with Natural England where I lead on the regional integration of resource protection into the new agri-environment schemes.

My interest has always been in applied research and I am keen to demonstrate how knowledge can be used to improve the way we make the use of our natural resources for sustainable food and energy production. I am currently working on a Defra funded project on soil organic matter management, where I will be working with farmers and farm advisors to develop and use case studies of management approaches to enable farmers to profit from improved soil organic matter management.
