I have built up a unique body of experience of science policy and management, both in the UK and developing countries. Working extensively for DFID as both micro-economist and research manager, for the past three years I have been lead adviser to Defra’s project on evidence-based policy making; developing a strategic overview of the Department’s evidence base for policy, and working closely with policy makers to identify the key criteria that make such evidence robust. I have been closely involved in the design and delivery of Defra’s Evidence & Innovation Strategy, a pioneering initiative to systematically realign Departmental strategic evidence needs for policy.

I have been working closely with Defra’s Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) team to understand the evidence needs for SCP policy, how they should be identified, organised and managed, and have helped set up the SCP Evidence Base Advisory Group. I am also a member of the UK’s Sustainable Development Research Network Advisory Committee, and regularly lecture on evidence-based policy making at the UK’s Centre for Management and Policy Studies. I have particular experience in:
• Evidence-based policy making. • Strategy analysis, policy cycle analysis and interdisciplinary working processes in the public sector: specialising in linking the natural and social sciences. • Priority setting, project preparation, appraisal and monitoring in the public sector. • Project and programme commissioning and management. • Managing financial and other resources, workshop and conference facilitation.
My recent work for GYA includes helping DFID to understand the potential impact of the sustainable consumption and production agenda on developing countries and the implications for DFID policy.
